Roger Federer confirms participation at the 2022 Laver Cup, teases fans with ‘dream’ Fedal farewell
Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal
20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer will be retiring from professional tennis after 24 years at the end of this week. Federer’s retirement will take place at the 2022 Laver Cup which is scheduled at the O2 Arena in London from the 23rd to 25th of September.
After doubts about his participation due to injury, Federer has confirmed he will indeed play in the tournament but its bittersweet news. The former World No. 1 won’t be playing in singles but will surely be playing in the Doubles. Asked about his doubles pairing during his interview with SRF, Federer said, “Maybe I can play doubles with Rafa, that would be an absolute dream.”
Roger Federer’s last singles match will remain his quarter-final defeat in Wimbledon 2021
With Federer revealing his surgeries don’t allow him to play singles again, the last match ever for the Swiss maestro will be his straight-set defeat to Hubert Hurkacz at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships where the third and final set was a 0-6 defeat for the 8-time Wimbledon champion.
While it will be a record no Federer fan would like to remember, just the opportunity to see Federer play once again is the sole consolation. Final match that too in doubles with arch-rival and now a good friend Rafael Nadal is another reason for celebration among fans especially the common fanbase of Federer and Nadal also dubbed ‘Fedal’.
As per the initial reports, the Doubles match is scheduled on Day 1 of the event, i.e. Friday, 23rd September which will mark the end of Federer’s glorious career. With lots of historic wins in the city of London, the farewell for Federer is expected to be a grand event and Team Europe will look to claim their 5th consecutive title as a farewell gift for Federer.
With 3 doubles matches spread over the 3-days, it also remains a question whether Federer will put down his racket on Day-1 or play in multiple doubles matches as he could also partner either or both of Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray as the Big-4 comes together for the one and only time in history.
However, the chances of 3 doubles matches for Federer look slim as his knee is not completely healed and he would not want to risk it once again after having already undergone multiple surgeries on his personal ‘Achilles heel’.
