Tennis legend Roger Federer has made a biased prediction ahead of the 2023 Laver Cup, which starts on September 22, 2023, claiming that Team Europe is going to win the tournament this year and reclaim the title. It was in the Laver Cup that Roger Federer played his last competitive match in 2022, playing for Team Europe and thus the Laver Cup is very close to his heart and his bias is justified.

“There’s something in me that’s Team Europe. I’m happy if World wins, don’t get me wrong, but somehow, I can feel it deep inside, I want Europe to win,” the Swiss international said in the press conference of Laver Cup.

For the uninitiated, The inaugural season of the Laver Cup was played in 2017, and the 2023 edition will be its seventh season. Team Europe has always been the dominant side in the Laver Cup since the tournament’s inception. They won every season from 2017 to 2021.

However, Team World made a shocking comeback in the very last edition of the tournament, i.e., in the Laver Cup 2022. Although Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were on the team, they only played doubles on Day 1 and were then replaced by Berettini and Norrie from Day 2 onward.

As the seventh season of the Laver Cup is set to begin on September 22, 2022, Team Europe seems all set to begin its campaign to reclaim the title as defending champions Team World look to add to their tally.

The two teams in the 2023 Laver Cup are pretty star-studded. Just like every year, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe are the captains of Team Europe and Team World, respectively. This year too, Team Europe seems to have a better team on paper. However, just like last season, Team World might manage to shock their opponents with their consistent performance, as they have way better doubles players, which was also mentioned by Roger Federer.

Defending champions Team World comprises Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, Francisco Cerundolo, Ben Shelton, Christopher Eubanks (alternate), and Milos Raonic (alternate).

Team Europe, on the other hand, has Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Holger Rune, Hubert Hurkacz, Gael Monfils, and Arthur Fils (alternate). Team World’s Ben Shelton, who performed brilliantly in the 2023 US Open, and Team World’s Andrey Rublev, who recently won the 2023 UTS Frankfurt, can be the differentials of their respective teams.
