Roger Federer is a tennis phenomenon, who dazzled fans with his incredible skill and athletic prowess on the court. With a record 20 Grand Slam titles and 310 weeks as the world’s No. 1 ranked player, Federer is a legend in the world of tennis. His graceful style of play and impressive record have earned him the admiration of fans and fellow players.
Roger was not at all shy to admit the fact that he thought it was ‘impossible’ to establish himself at the peak of his sport for as long as his idols, Michael Schumacher and Tiger Woods. The 20-time Grand Slam winner called it a day on his professional tennis at the ripe age of 41, after an illustrious career that spanned more than 20 years and saw him consistently pushing the boundaries of his sport.
Roger was present on The Daily Show for an interview where he was asked how he maintained his drive and motivation. In response, he said, “When I was growing up, I had Michael Schumacher that I would look up to, who was at the top for so long. Tiger Woods, the same thing”. Both Woods and Schumacher have remained at the top of their respective sports for extended periods of time.
Federer on the Use of Analytics and Sports Science in Tennis

Federer delved into the topic a bit more saying, “I always thought it was impossible to do that, to stay at the top for so long and have that drive”. Looking in hindsight, Federer now believes that it surely isn’t that difficult to establish oneself at the top. He said, “Now people ask me: ‘how did you do it?’ And I’m like, ‘well, it’s normal!.”
Federer has always been a down-to-earth person and in spite of attaining monumental success in his career, the tennis legend stated that he still had time to have some fun. He shared his trouble that sports in general were becoming too professional. “I also needed the likes of Pete Sampras to show me how it is at the top,” he said. “And it’s tough, you know?” However, he also mentioned that he had a lot of fun on the tour, and it was not just about tennis. He had some nice times attending fancy dinners with friends and was glad he didn’t take tennis too seriously or professionally.
Federer spoke about the increasing use of analytics and sports science in the game of tennis. He said, “It’s OK. It’s important.” He added that he has tried to implement some of the techniques of other players and that others are now showing how it’s done. Federer also noted that we live in a world that is heavily focused on statistics and breaking records, saying, “We love our statistics, and we love breaking records, and who’s the greatest, and all that stuff.”
