Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs Karolina Muchova: Preview
Ranked World No. 333, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova started her 2023 season after a long back due to surgery in 2022. Pavlyuchenkova used her protected ranking to compete at the French Open this year. Her comeback so far has not been very great, but she has made great strides in the French Open.
She bested three good-seeded players. In round 2, she took out Liudmila Samsonova; in round 3, fellow Russian Anastasia Potapova; and in round 4, Belgian Elise Mertens. Her match with Elise Mertens was the real test for Pavlyuchekova, as she had to fight back to win the second and third sets. She won the match with a score of 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. This is the third time the Russian has reached the quarterfinal stage at Roland Garros. She achieved this feat in 2011 and 2021. In 2021, she went on to reach the final, where she lost to Barbora Krejcikova.
Karolina Muchova on the other hand has had a very successful season at the Parisian clay. After creating the major first-round upset by defeating Greek star Maria Sakkari, Muchova’s big kill was in the 3rd round when she defeated Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets. This is the first time ever that the Czech has reached the quarter-final. The nerves will be a bit tricky for Muchova as this is her first-ever Roland Garros quarter-final match.
The two players have met three times before, with Anastasia winning two of the three matches. Pavlyuchenkova defeated Muchova in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open 2021 in a very tight two-set match, both of which went to a tiebreak. This match could also prove to be another thriller.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs Karolina Muchova: Prediction
This is a match that is very poised and difficult to predict at Roland Garros. Both players carrying the same amount of confidence and skill into this match prove that it’s going to be a closely contested one. However, the Russian has had more uphill battles, as her half of the pool was slightly tougher than the Czech.
Her comeback win against Elise Mertens ensured that she would come to this match with a lot of confidence. So on that basis, the Russian would take the match in three sets.
Match Prediction: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to win in 3 sets
