‘See you in Madrid,’ Rafael Nadal announces his comeback at the Madrid Masters

Rafael Nadal had a dream start to the 2022 season. Returning after a foot injury, he stunned the world by winning the Australian Open and then was on a huge winning streak. After Melbourne, he won the Acapulco Open and then made it to the final of the Indian Wells Masters where his winning streak was snapped by Taylor Fritz.

After the tournament, Nadal found out that he had a hairline fracture in his ribs which ruled him out for the next 4 weeks. He was thus forced to skip the initial part of the clay season- Monte Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open. He was expected to return at the Madrid Masters and now, 5 days before the tournament, Nadal has announced the same.

Nadal took to social media to announce that he will be competing in the Madrid Masters. He also revealed that despite his recovery and lack of preparation, he feels physically fine and hence wants to give it a shot at Madrid.

“Despite arriving just before preparation and being difficult, I really want to play and play at home since the opportunities are few. To try to do it in the best possible way. See you in Madrid,” Nadal wrote.

After the Madrid Masters, Nadal will only have one preparation tournament- the Rome Masters before the all-important French Open. As seen in the last few years, Nadal tends to start slow on clay before getting a lot of match practice and building momentum for the French Open.

But after missing Monte Carlo and Barcelona, Nadal won’t have much time and will have to get his engine started quickly at Madrid and Rome. Things won’t be easy for him but given Nadal’s record on clay and his form before the rib injury, he will still enter the favorite in every tournament that he plays this clay season.
