Novak Djokovic has finally found some luck this season. At the start, he was denied entry into Australia due to his vaccination status and hence wasn’t able to defend his Australian Open crown. He was also not permitted to enter the USA and hence didn’t compete in the Golden Swing. He began his season in Dubai but bowed out in the quarterfinal to Jiri Vesely. He started his clay season in Monte Carlo but to everyone’s surprise, he lost his opening match.
But Djokovic has played much better tennis this week in Belgrade. He defeated Laslo Djere in the second round before beating Miomir Kecmanovic in the quarterfinal. In the last 4, he came from a set down against Karen Khachanov to beat him in three sets 4-6,6-1,6-2.
As for Andrey Rublev, he has played better tennis this season as compared to the last one. After bowing out of the third round of the Australian Open, he made it to the third round at Rotterdam and then won the title at Marseille. He then won the Dubai Tennis Championships before reaching the semifinals at Indian Wells. He then suffered a shocking loss at Miami and then bowed out in the Round of 16 at Monte Carlo.
This week in Belgrade, Rublev defeated the likes of Jiri Lehecka and Taro Daniel in the early rounds before blasting past Fabio Fognini in the semifinals in straight sets 6-2,6-2 to book a date with Djokovic.

This will be the second meeting between the duo. Djokovic leads the H2H 1-0. They met at the ATP Finals last year where Djokovic won in straight sets.

Djokovic will be a huge favorite to win the title. He has a better record than Rublev and given his ranking, he will fancy his chances. But his recent form is not anywhere near to his best. He hasn’t played any Top 10 player this season and hence beating Rublev will be a huge challenge. The Russian will want to win his third title of the season and has a good chance to secure a rare win over Djokovic. Having said that, expect Djokovic to dig deep and win his maiden title of the season.
