Serena Williams and Meghan Markle know each other for quite some time. Both are friends. Both have many things in common such as both the ladies are successful in their respective fields and represent the African-American community.
So, when Meghan Markle invited her friend Serena Williams to be a part of the Netflix documentary series serializing the life of Prince Harry of the United Kingdom and Meghan Markle, the 23-time Grand Slam champion agreed. She made her appearance on the show in the third episode.
“I’m looking at it through the lens of my friend, not a Princess. They as a couple are so tight and rely on each other, and are each other’s best, best, best friends. I was just super excited,” she said in the episode.
Serena Williams was also invited by Meghan Markle on her podcast. Both the ladies talked about different things.
Serena Williams remembers being called ‘fat’ and ‘unfit’ by media
Serena Williams had a very successful career. A career that spans more than two decades. She won Grand Slam titles, ATP tournaments, Olympic gold medals, Billie Jean King Cup, and Hopman Cup, and became the World No.1 in the WTA rankings during this time. But even her successes on the court could not spare her from continued negative publicity around her body.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion reportedly described the moment in 2009 when she experienced intense bullying for being overweight. She explained that she had to take a break from professional tennis for a while because she had to undergo surgery. This resulted in increased weight put on as she returned to the court. Despite being the World No. 1, she said it was a challenging scenario because she observed a decline in her rankings. Even more so, she emphasized how being dubbed “fat” in every major newspaper during her trying time did her no favors.
“I really went through a tough stage that took place when I was No 1 and I had surgery and fell to almost 200 in the rankings. Everyone called me fat, saying I was really unfit. In every newspaper, the headline was ‘fat, fat, fat’,” said Serena Williams during one of the interviews.
However, all the negativity around her did not stop her from playing the game as she wanted to. She with her sheer and continuous hard work managed to again get to the top of the rankings and dominated women’s tennis once again.
