The Ukrainian tennis player Sergiy Stakhovsky has taken retirement from tennis and has taken up arms to help his country fight back the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He has trained with the Ukrainian army and has been actively participating in the war effort since February 2022. Meanwhile, he took some time for a candid chat with Ukrainian YouTube channel VDOMA.

The Ukrainian tennis player-turned-soldier garnered some negative media attention because a few players in the tennis community decided to participate in a tennis event in St. Petersburg, Russia. Among the participants of the tournament were a few players from Serbia, such as Janko Tipsarevic, Viktor Troicki, and Laszlo Györe, Hungary, such as Marton Fucovic and Ana Bogdan; and Spain, such as Pedro Martinez and Bernabe Zapata Mirallas.

He knows a few of them and has corresponded with them personally as well. That’s not all, the popular personality later made these messages public and also targeted none other than tennis great Novak Djokovic.

“Why posted these messages? On emotions. I am an emotional person and, unfortunately, very often I do some things, and then I think: ‘why was it necessary to do this?’ I have this. Of course, it was wrong, it was a personal correspondence and they should not have come out,” he clarified his stance in this interview.

The 37-year-old expected a better response from the tennis community in the wake of the Ukraine-Russia war. However, when he saw his fellows playing at the event in Russia, he did feel bad about it. Also, he was disappointed with the explanations the tennis players gave him for participating in the event.

“I was hooked not even by the fact that they wrote like that, I just know them for a long time and I did not expect such answers. I did not write anything so critical to them, I just wrote that I was disappointed with their act. In fact, they were not the first – I also wrote to Fucovich, who also played in Russia. He began to write in response that he played few matches and all that. But I say: ‘Listen, Marton, few games are one thing, but no one canceled the money’. And he replied: ‘Well, yes, and money too’,” Sergiy Stakhovsky continued.

Also, his statements against Novak Djokovic draw the ire of tennis fans all around the world. It is not a surprise that he had to face immense criticism on social media.

“And the reaction of the Serbs was really what I did not expect. Then I realized that the Serbs, in principle, are like that. But their reaction casts serious doubt on the authenticity of the message that Djokovic wrote to me. Of course, I won’t write about this anywhere, but in reality, I understand that this is one of Novak’s faces – that he seemed to be worried somewhere, but in fact they all support Russia,” he added further.

However, he continues to make serious allegations against the seven-time Wimbledon champion and the Serbian population for being supportive of Russia. With that being said, it will be pretty interesting to see how fans react to his new comments.
