“She has such good technique under pressure,” Chris Evert impressed by Emma Raducanu’s playing style after struggles of 2022
Emma Raducanu and Chris Evert
According to Eurosport analyst Chris Evert, the upcoming match between Emma Raducanu and Bianca Andreescu in the first round of the Miami Open on Wednesday is expected to be intense and exciting, with potentially explosive results. Both Andreescu and Raducanu won Grand Slam championships as teenagers, with Andreescu emerging victorious in the 2019 US Open and Raducanu winning the Flushing Meadows title two years later.
Raducanu recently participated in the Indian Wells tournament and made it to the last 16, where she won three consecutive matches for the first time in a year and a half. Unfortunately, she was defeated by Iga Swiatek in her next match. Evert, in a conversation with Arnold Montgault of Eurosport, expressed her opinion that the match between Raducanu and Andreescu in the Miami Open first round would be an intense and exciting one, stating that she anticipated “fireworks” between the two players.
Raducanu’s 2022 season was plagued by injuries, and she failed to progress beyond the second round of any of the four Grand Slam tournaments. In this year’s Australian Open, she was defeated in the last 64 by Coco Gauff. However, Raducanu’s performance has improved greatly since then, and Evert has been impressed by the noticeable difference in her style compared to last season. Evert said “I am very happy to see Emma doing well. She had a tough go after she won the US Open and I don’t think she really knew what hit her after a while. Everybody was really gunning for her and she played scared a little bit. I liked how aggressive and bold she was at Indian Wells. She was hitting out on the ball and not afraid to go for her shot.”
According to Evert, Raducanu was able to match the power of some very strong players and appeared to be playing with more confidence in her shots. She praised Raducanu’s technique and ability to handle pressure, noting that her game is less likely to falter compared to other players. Additionally, Evert commended Raducanu’s athleticism, movement, and solid play, stating that she expects Raducanu to have a better year than she did in the previous season.
Emma Raducanu has undergone an impressive physical transformation
At Indian Wells, Emma Raducanu exhibited a remarkable change in her physique, having gained considerable muscle. This change appears to be the result of her partnership with Jez Green, who may be considered the most significant appointment of her career thus far.
Emma Raducanu enlisted Jez Green’s help last October to overcome her chronic fitness problems that had been impeding her WTA Tour career since her breakthrough summer of 2021. Initially working with Green during the off-season, she eventually decided to make the partnership permanent.
Green played a pivotal role in the development of Andy Murray, a British tennis icon, from an injury-plagued teenager to the world’s top-ranked player on the ATP Tour. His impact on Raducanu has been similarly impressive, as evidenced by her impressive physical transformation during the Indian Wells tournament in California.
