Serena Williams set a loud roar at the Arthur Ashe Stadium when she made her way into the third round of the US Open 2022 after upsetting the world number two Anett Kontaveit in a thriller and exciting three-set match. Serena looked fierce and dominant throughout the match causing fewer mistakes to get another match to play before she is handed an upset that will end her journey on the final Grand Slam event of her career that lasted over two decades. The six-time US Open champion is looking confident as she has a 42-0 record in Round 1 and Round 2 at the US Open.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion was struggling to dig deep in the tournaments since her comeback to the grass court season but was eliminated in the first round. She had managed to win only one out of the four matches till the US Open with the win coming at the Canadian Open. Since her announcement regarding her retirement, she has been the talk of the town and is being watched carefully for a good final end to her career.

Mats Wilander, the former Swedish player, and a seven-time singles Grand Slam champion was completely stunned by her performance, especially after her remarkable victory over Kontaveit. He even pointed out at the fully packed stadium with many celebrities in attendance to watch Serena play for the final time and cheering loud for the six-time US Open champion which is something exceptional to watch. He said “I have not heard a crowd that loud. I think a lot of people must be seeing Serena for the first time here. She is playing great. She beat the number two player in the world and that’s a ranking that means one of the most consistent players, I am stunned.“
He even reflected on her game which has improved for the good and claims her to be one of the favorites to win the title at the US Open. He added “The movement is much better than I ever could’ve expected and the service is coming back. She is a threat now. I am surprised that she can keep it up but we’ve seen Serena do this at Grand Slam tournaments when she hasn’t had a lot of matches.“
He further added “She wins a match, then two, then the tables flip completely and now she is one of the favorites. I think this is a sign that there is more to come, she believes there is more to come. That’s how you win 23 Slams I guess. She internalizes the problem in front of her and uses the crowd. She becomes Serena and she has that eye of the tiger – amazing.“
