“She was at the top of her game amidst pressure” US Open Champion Iga Swiatek cites Serena Williams as the guiding light while dealing with Pressure

Serena Williams and Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek has been making the headlines with her amazing season this year. She won the US Open championship after defeating Tunisian, Ons Jabeur in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6(5). She is currently holding the World No. 1 ranking and will continue to do so for some time as she has gained enough points this season. She also became the first Polish woman to win the prestigious title.

The World No.1, Swiatek has been vocal about her mental health struggles during the past fortnight in New York. But she credits Legend Serena Williams for setting an example when it comes to tackling extreme pressure and stress during a grand slam. Williams retired at this year’s US Open after she suffered an agonizing third-round loss to Ajla Tomljanović.

In a recent interview with the WTA Insider podcast, Swiatek commented on the pressures during a grand slam run. She said, “I feel it. I feel like it’s not every time that I can make use of it. This is the thing that Serena really showed how to do. Because she was at the top for a long time and she was using that pressure and intimidation of being at the top of the game. She used it pretty well to make her matches a little bit easier, especially at the beginning.”

“I feel like I was able to do that a couple of times, but I want to do it more often. So for sure I’m aware of that and I want to try and use it in the right way.”

The Polish star finally added, “I think it’s not only about having solutions but being able to find them in the right moments. I see much more difference in my emotional state after I lose a set right now compared to how it was a couple of years ago. I’m able to process a little bit more and find these solutions.”
