Stan Wawrinka warns Holger Rune

The verbal exchange at the end of the match in the ongoing Indian Wells Open between Stan Wawrinka and Holger Rune has spiced up the event. The Swiss defeated the young Dane 6-2, 6(5)-7(7), 7-5 in the third round of the competition.

However, this is not the first meeting between the two players. They played against each other in the first round of the Paris Masters 2022. Holger Rune defeated Stan Wawrinka in this match 4-6, 7-5, 7(7)-6(3). At the end of that match, the three-time Grand Slam champion was heard on camera telling the young Dane “My advice to you is that you stop acting like a baby on court”.

These comments did not sit well with current No.8 in the world. Hence, this time when both players came towards each other for a formal handshake, he egged Stan Wawrinka to make some comments.

“You’ve got nothing to say now?” he said.

However, the 37-year old refused to make any suggestions or advice Holger Rune at that time.

“What do you want me to say?” Stan Wawrinka replied.

At the end of the match, in the post-match press conference, when the three-time Grand Slam champion was asked about for his opinions at the incident, he praised his rival. But he also admonished him and advised him to improve his behavior.

There is not much to say there. The only thing I can add is that he (Rune) is a young player, a very great champion with enormous potential. But he is making a reputation in the locker rooms that one day he will regret,” he said.

The Swiss is making giant strides this season. He improved his rankings and is now ranked in the Top 100 in the ATP singles rankings. Hence, with renewed confidence he entered in the Indian Wells Open 2023.

He participated in both the singles and doubles discipline at this Masters tournament. He partnered with Frances Tiafoe and the Swiss-American pair was successful to reach the second round of the competition, however, they had to give a walkover to the British-Dutch pair of Neal Skupski and Wesley Koolhof. Hence, they were knocked out without playing a single match.

In the singles discipline, however, Stan Wawrinka was able to reach the fourth round. He defeated Aleksandar Vukic, Miomir Kecmanovic, and Holger Rune in the previous rounds. But he could not pass the challenge of Jannik Sinner in the fourth round. The scoreline read 6-1, 6-4 in the favour of the Italian.
