Stefanos Tsitsipas has issued an early warning to Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and other rivals ahead of the Australian Open 2023. Seeded third in the Melbourne Park, the Greek tennis star enters as among the top contenders to claim the first Major of the year. Going by his lofty standards, Stefanos Tsitsipas had an underwhelming 2022 season.
However, the 24-year-old is determined to have a successful 2023 season. The 2019 Nitto ATP Finals champion was in fine form in the recently concluded United Cup, and hopes to carry the momentum into the Australian Open 2023. On several occasions in the past, Stefanos Tsitsipas has been guilty of letting his emotions get the better of him on court.
The Greek star acknowledges the fact that he could face several obstacles in 2023. However, he believes that his ability to bounce back stronger will certainly make a difference. “I need to be on court when these losses are going to come at some point, I need to constantly be in a mindset of bouncing back stronger,” said Tsitsipas in the pre-tournament press conference.
“We still have Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic playing good tennis” : Stefanos Tsitsipas
The 2022 season saw several younger players making a mark on the big stage. Carlos Alcaraz ended the year as the world number one, whilst also claiming the US Open title. Norwegian prodigy, Holger Rune stole the limelight in the last couple of the season. The two senior pros- Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic also had a pretty successful year, given that they shared three Major titles amongst themselves.
With the depth in the competition, Stefanos Tsitsipas believes that the 2023 season will be pretty challenging. “We have younger guys coming from behind, we still have Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic playing good tennis. So we are dealing with several things thrown at us. In my case, I know a lot of things can be done this year, and I have the capacity to withstand the pressure,” said Tsitsipas.
Stefanos Tsitsipas opens his Australian Open 2023 campaign against Quentin Halys in the first round on January 16, Monday. The Frenchman could prove to be a tricky opponent for the third seed, given his prowess on hard courts. However, Stefanos Tsitsipas has consistently performed well in Melbourne, and will certainly be eyeing a deep run.
