Tennis is one of the few major sports that forbid on-court coaching during match. In many other sports, such as football, cricket, and golf, coaches regularly give players guidance based on the circumstances. In the past, Wimbledon has been the practice’s strongest opponent since it felt that players should handle pressure on their own.

However, in regards to the topic of in-match coaching, French Open and Wimbledon have now changed their stance on the matter. Both the competitions have decided to modify the rules and now permits players to be coached by their mentors from the spectators stand. Thus, The Championships and Roland Garros have joined the other two Grand Slams- US Open and the Australian Open in permitting the practice in light of the impending shift. This change of policy is expected to bring an end to the practice of illegal coaching.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is one of the few tennis players who has always advocated for the on-court coaching. He had to pay fines many times because he was found to be coached during the match. Thus, when the decision was made he was certainly very pleased.

“Well, the coaching has always been there. Some coaches might have not been using it as much. In my case, it has always been part of how I do things when I’m on the court. I’m glad it’s not penalised now,” he said in an interview.

He thinks that this change in policy will help the tennis players and coaches.

“That’s how it should be. I see no reason to have a coach with you if they can’t share some of their view and knowledge with you when you’re competing. I feel like it’s something very natural in our sport. For sure it should be used,” he continued.
