Stefanos Tsitsipas lost to the tournament ‘lucky loser’ Jan Lennard Struff in the Madrid Open quarterfinals. Lennard Struff played with some great resolve and grit and was able to turn the match in his favor. Though world no. 5 played well, it was the break points saved by Struff that helped him win. In the final set, Struff got only one break point and his conversion was spot on. Tsitsipas lost the match 6-7, 7-5, 3-6.

The draws were set out in a manner for a Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas final. But the course of the tournament has changed drastically. Other than world no. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, all three semi-finalists are outside of the top 10. Borna Coric ranked 20, Jan Lennard Struff ranked 65, and Aslan Karatsev ranked 121. It will be interesting to watch whether any of these have the potential to tip over Alcaraz. Defeating Tsitsipas proved to be one of the biggest wins of Struff’s career.

Internet was once again not kind to the ‘unlucky loser’ here. Stefanos Tsitsipas was targeted by many on Twitter. One of the fans talked about how last year he put on a great fight to achieve what he did. But he is back to his losing form again. The fan Tweeted in Spanish, loosely translating to “Stefanos in free fall. 1 year ago he only raised his head and lowered it again.”

Some were not as brutal as others as they said that despite his loss, he is always graceful. And some feel that this might be the downfall of the player who achieved his peak a while ago.

A lot of his fans don’t seem to enjoy the constant coaching by Tsitsipas’s father. One can continuously hear his father coaching him in between the match which is getting on people’s nerves.

After entering the main draw as a ‘lucky loser’, Struff has managed to win against Lorenzo Sonego, 32nd seed Ben Shelton, Banja Luka champion Dusan Lajovic, Pedro Cachin, and Tsitsipas.
