Stefanos Tsitsipas thrashed on social media for blaming ATP rules which ‘forced’ him to participate in Indian Wells

Tsitsipas slammed by fans for misinterpreting ATP rule, says he was had to play in Indian Wells to avoid losing points

Stefanos Tsitsipas thrashed on social media for blaming ATP rules which ‘forced’ him to participate in Indian Wells

Stefanos Tsitsipas has alleged that an ATP rule was the primary justification for his participation in the Indian Wells Masters. Tsitsipas had stated prior to the start of the competition that he did not anticipate having a strong run because he had not yet fully healed from his shoulder injury. As a result, he lost in the opening round itself.

Tsitsipas explained that his absence would strip him from his best ATP 1000 result from last season. The Greek was upset with the rule due to no addition of points and the consequent fines. However, World No.3 was trolled by fans for his inadequate knowledge and misinterpretation of the rule.

Fans charged the Greek star of victimizing himself by implying that he was mistaken about the rule. They stated that there was no punishment if the player met the standards for the promotional activities as well as in the event of a ‘real’ injury. In contrast to Tsitsipas’ claims, the point suspension rules are invalid if one fulfills the ATP procedures.

Stefanos’ unawareness of the rule riled up fans as they slammed the player for misconstruing the rules. They also provided examples of other players who have not lost points in similar circumstances, such as Pablo Carreno Busta. As a committed player (ranked within the top 30), Tsitsipas has to play a stipulated amount of tournaments, as ATP has incentivized participation.

‘Veteran’ players have lesser requirements relatively. Despite the strict regulations, Stefanos had the leeway to not lose any points and withdraw from Indian Wells before it began. The Grand Slam finalist recently lost in the fourth round of the Miami Masters, failing to win another ATP 1000 championship title. Second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas crashed out of the Miami Masters in the fourth round. The Greek lost to Russian Karen Kachanov, who won in straight sets. Despite winning only one match in all their head-to-head encounters, Khachanov triumphed against Tsitispas. The latter has been allegedly struggling with a shoulder injury.

In four of the six tour-level competitions he has participated in this year, Khachanov has now advanced to the quarterfinals. After reaching his first quarterfinal in Miami, Khachanov moved up two spots to No. 14 in the ATP Rankings. The 26-year-old’s next opponent will either be Lorenzo Sonego or 25th seed Francisco Cerundolo.
