American World No.9 Taylor Fritz who is through to the second round of the Australian Open 2023 said that he was unaware of the social media trend in which people were blaming Netflix for the early exits of players featured in their series “Break Point”. Fritz defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili in 4 sets -6-4,6-2,4-6,7-5 and will face Australian Alexei Popyrin in the second round.

After the first-round victory, Fritz opened up in the press conference, “Actually, I didn’t know that was a [thing], Obviously I noticed the people pulling out of the tournament, but I didn’t know it was a thing, like, I’m going to lose my first round because I’m in the Netflix show. I didn’t think of that.

With the withdrawal of Netflix featuring players – Nick Kyrgios, and Ajla Tomljanovic and the early exit of Matteo Berrettini in the first round of the tournament, Taylor Fritz also looked vulnerable from the third set in his match. But with his lethal service games, the American came out of the trap and the so-called “Netflix curse”.

Taylor Fritz had to go through a tough test against Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round. Though he won in 4 sets, the break point conversion rate and return games will be there for him to improve upon. He will face the hometown boy Alexei Popyrin in the second round. Popyrin defeated  Chun-Hsin Tseng in 5 sets -6-4,6-7(5-7),7-6(7-5),6-7(4-7),6-1.

Fritz fired off 32 aces during the match. He also won 84 percent of his first-serve points in the match. Fritz came back brilliantly from 2-4 down to secure the first set and then comfortably won the second. He dropped the third set in his first professional match of 2023. But Fritz was able to close out a win in the fourth set and advance.

The eighth seed admits the seeding and closed roof affected his mentality and game, but he was able to get past it to win the match. If things go on according to the plan, he will have to face the tournament favorite Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.
