“The last dance!’ Venus and Serena Williams accept a wild card entry to play doubles for ‘one last time’ at the 2022 US Open
Venus Williams and Serena Williams
Serena Williams, one of the greatest female athletes of all time, is set to play the last few matches as she will bid adieu to the tennis world after the US Open 2022. She rose to fame when she won her first title in the year 1999 and went on to win 73 singles WTA titles including 23 singles Grand Slam titles, the most by a player in the Open era. The former World number one was ranked as number one for 319 weeks, including a joint-record 186 consecutive weeks, and finishing the year-end as No. 1 five times.
Venus Williams is a seven-time singles major champion winning five Wimbledon titles and two titles at the US Open. She played her singles match at the Citi Open after a gap of twelve months but failed to win against Rebecca Marino in the first round. She even failed miserably in her singles matches with another series of first-round exits at the Canadian Open against Jil Teichmann and against Karolina Pliskova at the Western & Southern Open.
Serena Williams and Venus Williams will play as a pair at the US Open for the very last time
As Serena will retire herself from the tennis world, it will be the last time that the Williams sisters duo will play as the doubles partner at the US Open. The Serena-Venus pair received a wild-card entry to the US Open and this will be their first time after a gap of almost four years. The last time they both played as a doubles pair was at the French Open in the year 2018 where they were defeated in the Round of 16 and their last outing as a pair at the US Open was in the year 2014.
Serena along with her sister Venus are a very dominant doubles pair who have together 14 major women’s doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals. The Williams sisters duo are a force to reckon and they have both been very dominant during their peak times as they are an undefeated pair in the doubles finals of the Grand Slams. They both have played a major role in revolutionizing and shaping new ways for women’s tennis and have been inspiring millions over their long careers which lasted over three decades.
