Former US Open champion Dominic Thiem is finally back to winning terms as he came back from the dead to beat Tommy Paul in the first round of the Vienna Open in three sets 2-6,7-6(2),7-6(6). Having lost the first set, Thiem was never in the match but somehow won the second set in the tie-breaker. He looked down and out in the third set and trailed 2-5 but staged a spirited comeback to win the match in a tie-breaker by the barest of margins.

After winning the match, he thumped on the ground as the local home crowd erupted with joy. With this win, Thiem has inched even closer to the Top 100 and is now just one win away from getting back in the Top 100. He will play either Nikoloz Basilashvili or top seed Daniil Medvedev in the Round of 16 on Thursday.

Thiem has been very unlucky with injuries for the last 2 years. He had a bad run after winning the 2020 US Open and then injured his wrist at the start of the last grass season which ruled him out for the rest of the season. He returned to the tour earlier this year during the clay season and took a lot of time to register his maiden win. He has reached a few semifinals ever since but will now fancy his chances to win it big- especially on home soil.
