“There are differences between men and women” Bill Maher uses Serena Williams as an example to hit back at transgender athletes

Bill Maher and Serena Williams

Serena Williams is one of the greatest tennis players of all time. She changed the dynamics of the women’s game and took it to newer heights. Her impact was so great that many considered her good enough to compete against men in her prime. She has won 23 grand slam titles in her career so far and is just one behind Margaret Court’s record of 24 major titles.

Serena brought the power game to women’s tennis which was just considered a thing in men’s tennis. She started hitting the ball hard from the baseline and dominated her fellow competitors through sheer power. Late in the contemporary world, there has been a constant debate about whether to include transgender athletes in sports and if yes, under which category- men or women?

While many believe that the choice should be left to the respective person according to their identity, some are concerned that it may alter the balance between men’s and women’s games. Bill Maher, who arguably is one of the most controversial comics in history, recently spoke on the subject in the Mike Tyson ‘Hotboxin’ podcast.

On the question about transgenders competing in sports, Maher went to length in speaking about the disparity in the men’s and women’s games. He directly questioned Mike Tyson about what would happen if he would’ve gone against a woman in the ring during his prime- to prove his point that men and women are different.

He recalled that John McEnroe, a multiple grand slam champion, once said that if American legend Serena Williams would’ve played in the men’s circuit, she would be No.700 in the world. Even Serena once recalled that men easily return her shots which most women were unable to.

“Obviously Mike, can you imagine going into the ring against a woman with you in your prime? Or even now? It would be a bloodbath. Or playing football, exactly! Men and women are different,” he said.

“John McEnroe I think it was who said that if Serena Williams played in the men’s circuit, she would be 700th in the world. And Serena Williams is obviously a powerful and amazing athlete. She even said once that when she played against a man, she didn’t realize. Serena said she hit shots that no woman can get to and he got to them easily. So, obviously, there are differences between men and women. Could we just agree on that?” he added.
