“They never give you an easy win,” Darren Cahill differentiates the Big Four from the rest
Darren Cahill reasons on why the Big Four are such dominant over the years
Big Four
Former Australian player, Darren Cahill explained what made the Big Four different from the rest of the players. It’s been 20 years since Roger Federer won his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon and still, Novak Djokovic comfortably wins the Australian Open. Such has been the domination of these four players over the years.
Occasionally, some players won a Grand Slam or two in these 20 years but they couldn’t keep their momentum. Such is the level of the game from these four and the longevity they maintained. Darren spoke in a podcast called The Big Deal and talked about how these players could maintain their form throughout these years.
In the podcast, the co-trainer of Jannik Sinner said “You have to develop a bit of resilience, a bit of confidence, and that only happens as you experience it. Youngsters aren’t afraid to step onto the pitch against these legends, but they need to be able to knock them out and beat them. What’s great about Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Andy Murray is that they never give you an easy win. You have to deserve it. So if you can beat these guys, you’ve earned it.”
On this occasion, he advised the young generation of players on how can they improve their game. Players like Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev, and many more showed a lot of hope as the next big players in tennis but couldn’t win consistently. There are a lot of skilled players in the younger lot, probably more skilled than the Big Four. However, they couldn’t keep their fitness and form for a longer time.
Marin Cilic showers praise on the Big Four
Marin Cilic believes that Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray have separated themselves from the rest of the pack because of their mental strength. Cilic is one of the few players to win a Grand Slam in the Big Four era along with Stan Wawrinka. Hence he revealed what it takes to beat them and win a Grand Slam title.
He said “I think the guys that we’ve seen, Roger (Federer), Rafa (Nadal), Novak (Djokovic), even Andy (Murray) for many years, those guys were like with killer instincts and unprecedented with their attitude. Just you know, getting things done by being so sharp with their attitude to execute things, on that, you know, day to day, and day after day after day after day.”
