2024 brings with it a whole new year and, more importantly, a new tennis season where the players start their campaign with the Australian tournaments, including the prestigious Grand Slam.
While Novak Djokovic is unanimously the favorite to win many Grand Slams throughout the year, former tennis player Tim Henman reveals a few other names who could give the Serbian a tight competition.
When asked who would perform well in next year’s slams, Henman voted for Djokovic without hesitation but also ranked his favorites after the Serb. The Brit also voted for Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner to win a Slam each, while Djokovic won the other two.
Look, there's only four majors next year. I wouldn't be surprised if Djokovic won a couple and Alcaraz and Sinner won each. So only time will tell.Said Henman on Eurosports.
The seemingly invincible Djokovic seemed to have met his match in the form of Alcaraz and Italian sensation Jannik Sinner, who beat him twice in a single day.
The new generation exemplified by Sinner and Alcaraz poses a serious threat to Djokovic’s quest to win titles. Alcaraz has previously won a couple of Slams, while Sinner has yet to win one and will look to start his tally in 2024.
Tin Henman believes Sinner has closed the gap between him and Carlos Alcaraz after a phenomenal finish to 2023
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, two of the most promising youngsters in the game, have always been compared to each other in the sport.
Alcaraz was always leaping ahead of Sinner in terms of gameplay and awareness on the court, but ever since his slight dip in form in the second half of 2023, Sinner started to peak, showcasing the world his true potential.
The Italian managed to reach the finals of the 2023 ATP Finals and then led his Italian team to a historic Davis Cup win. In that tournament, the 22-year-old also beat World No. 1 Novak Djokovic two times on the same day, making it his third win over the Serb in the year. Henman believes that this rise in Sinner’s form closed the gap between him and Alcaraz.
I felt that Alcaraz was definitely a good step ahead of Sinner but the way Sinner played at the end of last year, I think Sinner has absolutely closed the gap.Said the former British player
When comparing the two, the Brit also stated that Alcaraz could improve in a few aspects of the game and can surely reflect on his previous games and work towards them in 2024.
