“Time with my family and beautiful girlfriend,” Nick Kyrgios reveals the reasons for not playing the Laver Cup this year
Nick Kyrgios
Nick Kyrgios has been in the headlines since his successful stint at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship. Even though he lost in four sets in the finals to 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, he had won remarkable matches in his journey to the finals, especially his quarter-finals match against Stefanos Tsitsipas. This was his debut appearance at the singles finals of a Grand Slam tournament. He is one of the players to have beaten the Big 3- Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer.
Kyrgios has a flamboyant and aggressive style of playing and often loses his patience during the matches. During Wimbledon, he also did not stay away from his on-court antics of bashing racquets, verbal abuse, and arguments with spectators, especially during the finals where he had a disagreement with the chair umpire and even accused a lady spectator of being drunk. His quarter-final opponent also called him a ‘bully’. He was even suspended for a period of sixteen months in 2019 for his on-court antics.

Nick Kyrgios’ decision not to play will be a big blow to Team World at Laver Cup
Kyrgios recently informed his fans in a post on his social media account on Instagram that he will not be playing at the Laver Cup 2022. He revealed that he wishes to spend some quality time with his family and girlfriend amid all the rigorous tournament schedules. He wrote “No Laver Cup this time. Gotta have that time with my family and beautiful girlfriend.“
The Australian is an ever-present member of McEnroe’s squad as he played in the first four editions of the tournament. Team World in the Laver Cup is led by former tennis legend John McEnroe as the captain of the team and Felix-Auger Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, and Diego Schwartzman as his teammates. His absence from the Laver Cup is a big setback for Team World, who are still looking for the first title win.
Kyrgios is playing at the Citi Open followed by a wild-card entry at the Cincinnati Open and finally ending the hard-court season with the US Open 2022 which starts on August 29. He is yet to achieve a Grand Slam title. After his run at SW19, he will be one of the favorites to win the US Open.
