The man who made what the Rafael Nadal we know- Toni Nadal, uncle, and ex-coach of the Spaniard, has spoken about the chances of his nephew to be back strong in 2024 with new weapons and game style despite the aging body. He said that though the chances of winning slams again are low, he wants to keep believing in his boy, who has come back from injury setbacks like a phoenix every single time.

According to Toni Nadal, “Yes! I believe because I want to believe. I know that it’s getting harder to win with every year passing by, but I always believe that things will work out well, I think all the great players are very strong mentally – if they weren’t they wouldn’t be able to achieve what they did. Rafael is strong, Djokovic is strong, Federer is strong… With Rafa, he was taught from a very early age to play every point as if it was a final. That helped him become mentally really strong.”

Toni continued on how French Open will miss Nadal, “It’s disappointing that he can’t be here because this is the only tournament he never missed since the start of his career. Look, it was bad luck that he wasn’t able to recover in time, but OK – it’s a shame, but life goes on.” (Source: Tennis Majors)

Rafael Nadal and injury concerns

The Spanish icon Rafael Nadal has had an injury-hit career. Despite winning almost everything a tennis player could dream of, he had to miss a lot of important tournaments, including Grand Slams and Olympics, due to injury concerns. The 2023 French Open is the latest one on those heartbreaking list of tournaments for the Spaniard and his fans.

It is almost a miracle that Nadal has come back stronger to reach new milestones and break more records after having to deal with a lot of injuries throughout his career. Due to the inborn condition called Mueller-Weiss syndrome in his left foot, Nadal started his career with a special shoe designed with an extra cushion on his left shoe.

Though the tennis experts and medical personnel predicted that Nadal will not have a long career due to his injuries and physical game, the 22 Grand Slams over the course of 18 years will be enough to prove them wrong. After the radio-frequency treatment done last year to numb his left foot nerves, Nadal was expected to prolong his career with less pain and injuries but fate hit in a different form later- an abdomen injury in the second half of 2022 and a hip injury during the Australian Open 2023.
