British journalist Simon Chambers has revealed an interesting detail about the first time Toni Nadal and Roger Federer crossed paths with each other. Simon Chambers co-authored the book ‘The Roger Federer Effect,’ which was released in October last year. This book dives deeper into the life of the Swiss tennis player, according to statements from his family members, close friends, and fellow players on the Tour.

Simon Chambers also interviewed Rafael Nadal‘s uncle and former coach Toni Nadal, who revealed some interesting details. The Spaniard stated that his nephew and Roger Federer shared a great relationship, which developed over the years.

The veteran revealed that he was awe-struck by the Swiss’ long hair when he saw him for the first time. He went on to describe the traits which made him like Roger Federer, which includes his conduct on and off the pitch.

“I spoke with Toni, he was great. Nadal and Federer had a great relationship, especially over the years, getting closer. But surprisingly, the first thing Toni remembers is how beautiful Roger’s hair was,” said Chambers.

Toni Nadal reveals first encounter with Roger Federer at Wimbledon

Toni Nadal reveals that he saw Roger Federer for the first time at Wimbledon when he was competing against Mardy Fish. This encounter dates back to 2003 when the Swiss won in four sets. He went on to claim the Wimbledon title that year as he started a procession of five consecutive championships. 2003 Wimbledon also marked the first Grand Slam main draw appearance for Rafael Nadal. Toni Nadal profoundly remembers his long hair and also praised the Swiss for his polite nature.

“He said that he had great hair. Yes, he had great hair. – Long hair… He first saw it when he played Mardy Fish at Wimbledon, and that was one of the first things he noticed. And the family label of the Nadals. Toni likes manners, courtesy, and Federer was always very nice to them,” said Chambers, on Toni Nadal’s comments.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal shared a great rivalry back in the day, as the duo went head-to-head against each other in most of the important tournaments. The Swiss tennis player competed in his last competitive match at the Laver Cup last year, where he teamed up with Rafael Nadal for a doubles encounter.
