Mother’s Day is, for many, one of the most important days on the calendar. They wish their mothers well on this day and make sure they thank them for the life they’ve got and feel grateful. Whether you are a typical human being or a hotshot celebrity, the feeling on this day remains the same. However, not always do you get the desired reaction to your wish for your mother.

The 2023 Madrid Open has been one such place where almost everything apart from tennis can be placed under controversy. To the extent that a simple Mother’s Day wish for his mother from one of the top players in the world was also not spared at the event. World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, after winning the event, wished his mother a very happy Mother’s Day. However, the reactions he got weren’t ideal.

The Spaniard isn’t really the culprit here. However, he is part of most of the event’s controversies. May it be Cakegate that involved him and WTA No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka or even the final he played in that saw the ball models not wear mini skirts. Similarly, his Mother’s Day wish was looked at differently. Funnily enough, the event didn’t allow the women’s doubles final to have post-match speeches on an auspicious day.

The fans were slightly bemused that having four women compete in a master’s series event for the trophy and not allowing any of them to give their post-match regards was not the most welcome thing for the sport.

Many feel that it is a clear-cut case of discrimination, similar to many other stories from the event. Allowing Alcaraz to wish his mother after his men’s singles finale and not allowing Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Victoria Azarenka, and Beatriz Hadad Maia, who were the four competitors for the women’s doubles finale, sparked unavoidable controversy.

Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Hadad Maia beat Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula 6-1 6-4 in the finale. However, that didn’t remain the talk of the town for long as not allowing them to give speeches took over.

Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
