21-year-old Iga Swiatek has had a tremendous season so far and has been the best player of the season by a mile. She began her season by making it to the semifinal of the Australian Open and then won her maiden hard court WTA 1000 title in Doha. She was then on a historic 37-match winning streak and won 6 consecutive titles- Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, Rome, and eventually, the French Open. She then had a dip in the form where she lost at Wimbledon and a poor North-American hard court swing.
This fortnight in New York, she defeated the likes of Jasmine Paolini, former US Open champion Sloane Stephens, and Lauren Davis in the first week, and then got past Jule Niemeier in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals, she eased past American No.1 Jessica Pegula and then survived a scare from Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals in three sets 3-6,6-1,6-4.
After Swiatek, Ons Jabeur has definitely been the best player of the season and it is fitting that both these women will meet in the last major of the year. Jabeur missed the Australian Open due to injury before back-to-back outings at Dubai and Doha. She then had an amazing clay season where she reached the final of the Charleston Open before winning the Madrid Open and then followed it up with a runner-up finish at the Italian Open. On grass, she reached the Berlin grass-court championships and then reached her maiden major final at Wimbledon.
At the US Open this fortnight, she defeated Madison Brengle, Elizabeth Mandlik, Shelby Rogers, and Veronika Kudermetova in the initial rounds before beating Ajla Tomljanovic in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she whacked in form Caroline Garcia in the semifinals in straight sets 6-1,6-3 to reach her second consecutive major final.
This will be the 5th meeting between the duo. The H2H stands deadlock at 2-2. They last met in Rome earlier this year where Swiatek won in straight sets.

If Wimbledon points would’ve counted, Jabeur would already be World No.2, so in a way, this is the match between the two best players in women’s tennis right now. Both Swiatek and Jabeur have had their struggles along the road but have come out stronger this season. Swiatek is 9-0 in the last 9 finals she has played and hasn’t dropped a set in any of those. Her breathtaking record makes her the favorite to win the match but Jabeur will leave no stone unturned. She made it to the final of Wimbledon a month ago and had to swallow the hard pill. She will definitely fancy her chances this time given her preparation and Swiatek’s exposure to big forehands.
Despite the result, it will be a historic Saturday evening on Ashe. We will have either the first Polish woman to win the US Open or the first Arab woman to win a grand slam title and it looks like Swiatek may just have enough to win the third major title of her career.
