The sixth seed, Coco Gauff, will square off against Elise Mertens in the third round of the US Open. The American teen has been off to a great start by defeating players such as Laura Siegemund and Mirra Andreeva, respectively. Mertens recently defeated Danielle Collins to advance to the third round of the tournament. Both players will be meeting for the third time.

Coco Gauff’s previous match had us witnessing the battle of the teens, with Gauff emerging as the winner in straight sets. Andreeva lost 6-3, 6-2, in straight sets. The Russians started well by breaking Gauff in the opening game. But Gauff fought back to claim a breakpoint and win four consecutive games. The 19-year-old won an astonishing 21-shot rally in the final game. She had started her journey in the tournament by winning 6-2, 2-6, and 4-6 against German player Laura Siegemund.

Meanwhile, Mertens won against Danielle Collins in the second round. She defeated the American player 3-6, 7-6 (7), and 6-1. The Belgian player started off weak, losing the first set in only 37 minutes. The second set saw Mertens stave off two match points at 6-5 and 7-6. She finally won the tiebreak with a score of 9-7. In the third set, she broke Collins three times and emerged victorious. She won the first round 6-3, 3-6, 6-7 (10) against Mirjam Bjorklund.

The duo has met twice before. They met the first time on the grass at the Eastern International, where she was defeated by the 19-year-old 0-6, 7-6(4), 7-5. Their next meeting was on the clay court at the French Open, where she was defeated again in straight sets. Mertens, a two-time US Open quarterfinalist, will have to work hard in order to defeat the world no. 6. Gauff has been in good form recently and will probably be able to win this one.
