Serena and Venus Williams’ childhood coach Rick Macci has made a bold prediction for the 2024 season as he anticipates a clash between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. As Italian tennis ace Sinner won his maiden Grand Slam title at the 2024 Australian Open, Macci believes this will push Alcaraz to do even better.

Notably, Sinner won the title in Melbourne on the back of a memorable performance in the final. The 22-year-old Italian came back from two sets behind to win the match against Daniil Medvedev in five sets. Sinner also defeated ten-time champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. The Italian completely dominated Djokovic as the Serbian could win only 13 games.

On the other hand, Carlos Alcaraz had a shambolic performance at the year’s first Grand Slam as the Spaniard bowed out after losing to Alexander Zverev. Alcaraz lost to his German counterpart in four sets. This added to his woes after the title-winning performance at 2023 Wimbledon. However, with Sinner landing his maiden Grand Slam title, Macci believes Alcaraz will be motivated to do better.

Time for Carlos Alcaraz to bring back his intensity

Just like Rick Macci, many are expecting Carlos Alcaraz to bring back his intensity. The 20-year-old Spaniard has been struggling to go deeper into tournaments ever since he won the title at the 2023 Wimbledon. While Alcaraz managed to reach the finals at the Cincinnati Masters, the two-time Grand Slam winner has not gone past the semifinal stage of any tournament.

He was knocked out of the 2023 US Open after losing to Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal. He lost to Jannik Sinner in the China Open semifinal. At the Shanghai Masters, Alcaraz lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round. He had a second-round exit at the Paris Masters.

Alcaraz also lost in the semifinal of the 2023 ATP Finals as Novak Djokovic got the best out of the Spaniard in straight sets. Now, at the 2024 Australian Open, Alcaraz lost in the quarterfinal. It is to be seen how the youngster bounces back from this series of disappointments. Alcaraz might take a leaf out of Sinner’s book as Macci anticipates.
