Australian tennis coach Wally Masur recently praised Novak Djokovic on the AO show podcast for running the sport even at the age of 36. He applauded the Serbian for dominating tour after tour, even at this age. Drawing comparisons to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, Masur said that Novak’s longevity is on another level altogether.
“This guy is a monster and we know Nadal is a monster, Federer too, but the most incredible thing about Novak is his impressive meticulousness. I don’t dare predict anything against Novak Djokovic. He almost achieved the Calendar Grand Slam, just one match away against Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon. It’s extraordinary at his age.” (H/T: The AO Show podcast)
The last Grand Slam that Federer won was the 2018 Australian Open. He was 36 years old back then. However, during that time, he did not dominate every tour he played, which the Serb is doing right now.
Talking about Rafael Nadal, he also won his last Grand Slam last year when he was 36 years old. However, he has now been away from the court for a long time owing to his injury and will return soon at the 2024 Australian Open.
Djokovic has won three of the four Grand Slam events this year. He won the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open, only losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Wimbledon Open. He would have had a perfect record in Majors this year.
What next for Novak Djokovic?
Djokovic decided not to play in the China Open and the Shanghai Masters after winning the 2023 US Open. The Serb usually takes breaks after winning Major tournaments and this is exactly what he is doing right now.
Thankfully for him, it did not hinder his rankings in any way whatsoever. His immediate rival, Carlos Alcaraz, performed poorly in both tournaments. Thus, Novak Djokovic’s lead over the second-ranked player just solidified during this time.
The Serb is most likely to end his break and return to court in the 2023 Paris Masters, which will commence in the last week of October. Holger Rune, the defending champion of the tournament, is currently suffering from horrible form and the tournament is up for grabs.
