On Thursday night, Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-3 at the ABN AMRO Open. All Sinner needed was 1 hour and 21 minutes to show the exit to his Greek opponent. This is his first win against top-3 players in the rankings and naturally, he could not contain his happiness after the match.

The victory of Sinner is coming after his loss to Tsitsipas in the 2023 Australian Open. The 21-year-old fell short of the eventual runner-up of the tournament in a five-set thriller there. The win in Rotterdam, which is Sinner’s first against Tsitsipas since 2020, brought some relief for him.

“It means a lot obviously,” Sinner said after the match. “A lot of work behind. I’m very happy. I played some good tennis, very focused today”. Sinner was not short of praising his rival Tsitsipas despite having a poor H2H against him. “Hopefully, I can keep it going but for sure, Stef is an incredible player. I have a lot of respect for him. He played incredible tennis this year already.”

Earlier in the round of 32, Sinner overcame Benjamin Bonzi in three sets encounter. He felt pumped up after the match. “I was looking forward to this match to be honest, after my win yesterday already. So I’m very happy about my performance today,” Sinner explained.

The win will definitely boost the confidence of the current World No. 14 Sinner. This will also serve as revenge for the bitter defeat at the hands of Tsitsipas in the Australian Open earlier. But as far as H2H between the two is concerned, the World No. 3 leads by 5-2.

Sinner himself is aware of this fact. “Head-to-head I am still far back to him,” Sinner said. “For me, this is a very important win. I lost a tough one in Australia, where I felt like I was playing great. Today I was also playing well.”

Now, the Monte Carlo resident will face Swiss star Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinal round. The three-time Grand Slam champion defeated Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-3 on Wednesday and is yet to drop a set in two Rotterdam matches. Acknowledging the great run of Wawrinka, Sinner said, “I’m very happy that he is playing again at a very, very high level.” “It’s going to be a tough march for sure.”
