Roger Federer
Former World No. 1, Roger Federer, has finally decided to retire from the sport after a successful career of 24 years. The Swiss maestro announced his decision on Thursday, 15th September via his social media handles to break millions of his fans’ hearts with the news.
The 41-year-old had been battling injuries and fitness issues since 2020 and having undergone two big surgeries in the past three years, it was imminent that his retirement is around the corner. But one can never be truly prepared for an all-time great’s retirement despite all the hints being there.
Rolex calls Roger Federer ‘one of the most revered athletes’
With tributes pouring in for Federer from all corners of the world, not only tennis players but athletes from other sports and even various brands that did not even sponsor the Swiss have shown their respect towards Federer. Talk about having a legacy.
One such heartwarming tribute was paid by luxury watch company Rolex, one of Federer’s oldest sponsors. The association between Federer and Rolex started back in 2006 which was then one of the biggest deals for an athlete. Federer did not disappoint the brand and proved the investment fruitful with his on-court success.
A true tennis fan will remember Rolex’s videos of Federer that often came up prior to the start of Wimbledon and with the same elegance and grace, synonyms of both Federer and Rolex, a tribute for the former World No. 1 was once again released by the watch company.
The video is a compilation of the greatest moments of Federer’s career including his Grand Slam wins and some of the shots that became his trademark over the years. With Federer being a big philanthropist as well, the video also captures some of his charity work, giving a total insight into his life.
The video also has a narration ongoing as the visuals come on the screen saying, “How exactly do we measure greatness? By the number of titles? The number of Grand Slams? Perhaps. But there are certain things that numbers can’t convey. The beauty he instilled in the discipline, enriching and perfecting his game year after year.
“His grace and elegance on and off the court which made him one of the most revered athletes of our time. Numbers will never fully encompass the extent of his legend, continually growing, nor the breadth of his legacy, perpetually inspiring. For his is a greatness that can never be measured.”
