Andrey Rublev defeated Holger Rune in Round 4
Andrey Rublev played some of his best tennis at this year’s Australian Open. His 2022 season ended with a semi-final appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals. Entering the Slam as the No. 5 seed, Rublev eyed a maiden Major semi-final spot.
On six Slam occasions before the Melbourne tournament, Rublev had fallen short at the quarterfinal stage. As a result, he looked to better his Slam record and go a step further.
Rublev is touted as one of the most humble ATP professionals. His on-court outbursts are mostly targeted at himself. He can often be spotted destroying a racquet on his leg. Regardless of this, Rublev is at his jovial best post-battle. He has thanked his fans on multiple occasions for energizing him over the finish line.
One such incident caught the public’s attention. Rublev was spotted staying back after a hard-fought Australian Open battle. For the singular reason of letting his fans take pictures with him.
He engages fans and proceeds to get photographs taken with them whenever he can afford to do so. His nagging on-court self disappears once the match comes to an end. He understands the importance of public support, especially during the course of the match. A fan responded to the aforementioned post, stating the contrast between Rublev’s in-match and post-match demeanor.
Andrey Rublev’s Round 4 clash with Holger Rune was one for the ages
The Danish ace Holger Rune was on a collision course with Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open. And it came to pass in Round 4. When the two met, it proved to be arguably the best match of the tournament.
Rune received multiple match points in the penultimate set. Before his opponent on the other end of the court proved his clutch self. Rublev saved each of those points and took the match into a fifth set. Tied at 6-6, the culmination was to take place in a 10-point tie-break.
Holger Rune jumped to a 5-0 lead. At one point, the Danish had a 7-2 lead in the tie-break. But destiny had other plans. Rublev kept his calm and revived his hopes of a last-eight appearance. He clawed his way back. and ultimately won in what could be described as the luckiest tie-break point in history. He saw his return serve bounce over to Rune’s side after striking the net.
Consequently, the match ended. Rune cut a disheartened figure. He retreated to the bench, exhausted and heartbroken. Rublev lived to fight another day. But his campaign came to a close in straight sets against eventual champion Novak Djokovic at the quarterfinal stage.
