Gael Monfils‘ injury woes persisted as he had to withdraw from his first-round encounter against fellow countryman Ugo Humbert at the 2023 Miami Open. Monfils had been absent from the ATP Tour for seven months due to persistent injuries before making a comeback at the Indian Wells Open. Unfortunately, Monfils suffered a straight-set defeat in his opening match against Jordan Thompson, losing 6-3, 6-1.

After that, Monfils decided to participate in the ATP Challenger Arizona Tennis Classic, where he encountered Alexander Shevchenko in the opening round. However, the contest between the two was arduous, with Shevchenko ultimately triumphing 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. In the subsequent Miami Open, Monfils faced compatriot Ugo Humbert in his first match. The score was tied at 3-3 in the opening set when Monfils had to retire because of a nagging wrist injury that impeded his capacity to play.

As Monfils shook hands with Humbert and the umpire, it was evident that the former World No. 6 was in excruciating pain. He grimaced as he removed the bandages from his wrist before departing from the court. Monfils, who is now 36 years old, battled with the wrist injury during the match and was unable to perform at his optimal level. He winced in agony between points, underscoring the severity of his struggle.

It will be a big blow to Monfils who looked to make a strong comeback from injury. However, fans and the tennis world do believe that he can make another speedy recovery and comeback stronger. Monfils himself will be disappointed with these frequent injuries that are hampering his career and will work on his fitness.

Monfils has a long history of injuries apart from the current wrist injury. He has also dealt with other injuries, including back pain and knee issues. Despite these setbacks, he has continued to work hard to stay fit and healthy and has made numerous comebacks to the tour.

However, there were a few fans who slammed Monfils for his fitness and asked him to retire and be a family man. Moving forward, Ugo Humbert is set to face off against Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round of the 2023 Miami Open. However, Monfils is loved by many for his wow moments on the court.
