Russian former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev finally ended his title drought on Sunday. The 27-year-old scored a much-needed win in the ATP Rotterdam Open over his Italian rival Jannik Sinner. After losing the first set, Medvedev retained his calm before finishing the match 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Medvedev improved the head-to-head lead over Sinner to 6-0. In a post-match conversation, he shared an adorable story about his wife and daughter. He explained how the semifinal victory earlier put a smile on the face of the 4-month-old who watched her dad on TV.

“Yesterday, my wife told me that when I was giving the speech on the court, she put my daughter in front of the TV and she started laughing and smiling so I hope she’s doing that again”, Medvedev said.

Talking about the match, Medvedev acknowledged the challenges posed by the Italian opponent. “It was a very tough match, I would say mentally for both of us, I think,” he said. “Jannik was on top of me, especially in the first part of the first set. I managed to come back into the set even though, in my opinion, I was playing worse than him. Maybe that gave me some time to find my rhythm,” he continued.

The Russian star was going through some tough times in the past few months. After clinching the 2021 US Open title, Medvedev’s form started to dip somewhat. The heartbreaking loss in the hands of Rafael Nadal in the 2022 Australian Open proved too much to handle as he struggled to recover later. Following his loss in Melbourne this year, he dropped out of the top 10.

Now Medvedev’s win in Rotterdam will give him some much-needed momentum to win big in the current season. “It’s great because it’s still the beginning of the year,” said Medvedev. “My third tournament of the year, and already a title. Last year I needed 12 tournaments or something like this.”

Medvedev has returned to the top 10 of the rankings with the win over Sinner. He is delighted with this as well. “Mentally it’s tough to come back after you [drop out] of the Top 10. I’m just happy to find my form and am looking forward to the next tournament hopefully I can continue in this way,” Medvedev expressed about the same.
