WATCH: “It’s LEGAL!!” Nick Kyrgios blasts at his box in rage due to ‘coaching ambiguity’ against Thanasi Kokkinakis at the US Open
Nick Kyrgios
Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios eased his way past his best friend and doubles partner Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round of the 2022 US Open. Kyrgios defeated Kokkinakis in straight sets 6-3,6-4,7-6(4) to keep his good run in the 2022 season going. He is one of the dark horses of the tournament and will fancy a deep run and this win will definitely boost his confidence.
Kyrgios looked surprisingly calm at the start of the match and didn’t make much fuss about missing shots. He eventually got into his groove and then converted the only break point opportunity he got. He went on to win the first set comfortably 6-3 and then carried the momentum into the second set. He was quick off the blocks once again and demonstrated a serving masterclass.
The Aussie showman, with a break’s help, took the second set 6-4. It all looked in Kyrgios’ control as he held serve nicely and converted all the break point opportunities he got. But Kokkinakis raised his level and was a much better player in the third set. He took command of the rallies and started serving well. He played on merit to stay on serve with Kyrgios.
Nick Kyrgios gets frustrated by the on-court coaching rule
Kyrgios was visibly frustrated as he wasn’t able to get the break. In the fifth game, he had multiple breakpoints but couldn’t convert any as a result of which he was very upset. What added fuel to the fire was Kokkinakis‘ box giving him coaching after every point. Kyrgios, as helpless as he was, yelled towards his box after winning the sixth game.
“These people keep talking point in, point out! But he’s allowed to do it, It’s legal now, it’s LEGAL!!” Kyrgios yelled towards his box while picking up his towel. Kyrgios was referring to the change in rules this time at the US Open where they have allowed off-court coaching with some restrictions.
Off-Court coaching is allowed from the designated Player/Coach Box or seats this fortnight. The rules are clear coaching isn’t allowed from any place other than the players’ respective boxes.
Kyrgios managed his cool and eventually won the set in a tie-breaker. He will now face Benjamin Bonzi in the second round on Wednesday.
