Novak Djokovic stands by his refusal to be vaccinated despite losing World No.1 ranking
Novak Djokovic is resolute in his decision to not receive the COVID-19 vaccine, even though it has caused him to lose his position as the world’s No.1 ranked tennis player. Despite his victory at the 2023 Australian Open, Djokovic has been overtaken in the rankings by Carlos Alcaraz. Prior to last week, Djokovic had been setting a new record for the highest number of weeks as the top-ranked player in the ATP rankings.
Novak Djokovic’s record-breaking reign as the top-ranked ATP player was interrupted at 380 weeks due to his request for an exemption to enter the United States being denied. This meant he was unable to participate in the first two ATP 1000 tournaments of the season, namely the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open. At present, the US prohibits the entry of unvaccinated individuals, but this policy is expected to be lifted in May.
Novak Djokovic, who was unable to participate in the Indian Wells Masters due to his vaccination status, allowed Carlos Alcaraz to regain the top spot in the rankings by winning the tournament. Despite this setback, Djokovic stated in an interview with CNN that he has ” No Regrets” about his decision.
