Sebastian Baez, the 21-year-old player from Argentina defeated Lorenzo Sonego in his debut first-round clash at the Napoli Cup. It ended his 11-match losing streak since the finals of the Swedish Open where he lost to Francisco Cerundolo in the finals.

To celebrate his spectacular win, the Argentine went ahead to wear a special shirt to put an homage to the Argentine legend Diego Maradona. He donned the special Maradona 1986 jersey since it was the same year Argentina had gone on to win the FIFA World Cup trophy and Maradona was the captain of the team.

The jersey was light blue and white in color with Maradona’s number 10 printed on the back. Baez during the post-match on-court interview spoke about the special victory celebration as he grew up idolizing the football legend. He said “The best in history. He’s my idol. He’s everything. It’s special to be here in Maradona’s house. It’s a very nice moment and I try to enjoy it. Happy to stay in Maradona’s house a little longer.

During the trip to the ATP 250 Napoli Cup, Baez toured the streets around the city along with his coach wearing the special t-shirt made in tribute to the present World Cup team of Argentina. During the on-court interview, he cherished those moments and even spoke about having the t-shirt, soccer ball, and everything.

Sebastian Baez even went on to post pictures along the streets painted with huge murals of Maradona in the background. He had captioned his social media posts as “Simply D10S“.

The young Argentine made his debut in the Grand Slams at the Australian Open but lost in the second round to Stefanos Tsitsipas even after putting up a great fight. He had retired during the middle of his first-round match at the US Open against Carlos Alcaraz due to an injury.

He has made it into the finals of the three ATP tournaments and has managed to win his maiden ATP title at the Estoril Open defeating Frances Tiafoe in straight sets. It prompted his overall rankings as he made his way into the Top 40 of the ATP rankings.
