Former World No 1 Serena Williams is one of the most inspirational players the sport has ever seen. She has been one of the flag bearers in popularizing women’s tennis and paved the way for many aspiring players by leaving behind her own legacy. Following her incredible journey in professional tennis, she has been bestowed with special recognition at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery for being a true champion of the sport.

With 23 Grand Slam singles titles in total and 14 doubles major titles up to her name, Serena is truly a champion of the game with numerous other accolades and achievements, as the list goes on. She finished as the year-end No. 1 five times while being ranked as the World No 1 for a record 319 weeks. She is one of the few Black Americans that have etched their names on the highest stage.

A renowned American lawyer and President of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Janai Nelson shared some glimpses of the prestigious ceremony as she turned up her glamorous quotient and looked spellbound in a violet-hued shimmery gown. She congratulated Serena for receiving the Portrait of Nation award for her extraordinary contribution as a Black woman and shared some valuable insights from the acceptance speech of the retired American legend.

While receiving the award, Serena Williams said, “It’s important to see Black women smiling in the National Portrait Gallery. Black women are serious, but we also have joy. We are the backbones of this country,”. Along with Serena, her sister Venus has also been recognized at the same exhibition with newly commissioned larger-than-life portraits.

Her contribution to the sport needs no introduction as she has been nominated for the “Game-Changer of 2022” category at the People’s Choice Awards. The former 7-time Australian Open champion has been a constant name on the nomination list for the last five years, consecutively. Serena Williams had also adjudged the winner of the Game Changer category in the year 2018 for her exemplary contribution to the sport.

Apart from tennis, she has invested in various startup companies through her venture capital firm. With her keen interest in sports, she is a proud owner of a new team in the Pickleball League. She further went ahead with her strategic investments as she became a key investor in the golf startup company founded by Golf legends, Tiger Woods and Rory Mcllroy.
