“We must catch up,” Dominic Thiem believes that the rest of the ATP Tour needs to match Carlos Alcaraz as quickly as possible
Dominic Thiem and Carlos Alcaraz
Dominic Thiem is trying to regain his fitness and form back. He is playing at Gijón Open for now. He had to play a tough match against a formidable opponent in the form of Marcos Giron to proceed to the next round. But eventually, he was able to overpower his opponent and advance into the quarterfinal. He won against Giron of the USA 3-6 6-4 6-0.
In a recent interview, He talked a lot about many things. He was very open to all the questions and discussed at length this recovery, yearly goals, competitors, and personal outlook on his future.
On the question about his peers, he seems very impressed with Carlos Alcaraz. When the interviewer asked the 2020 US Open champion about his views on the current US Open Champion, the Austrian had only praise for the Spanish teenager.
“You already have a unique career. He is the youngest number-one in history and winner of the US Open as a teenager, exceptional. He is about to change tennis, because in New York, no matter how long the matches went on, he was there the whole time, playing offense, going to the net, and contesting every point without fear. And I think this is new. Nobody did that before. We must catch up,” Thiem said.
Dominic Thiem wants to compete against the best
He is itching to play once again at the top level. He wants to compete at grand slams, beat the best players around, and win trophies. He is showing his mettle in the ongoing Gijón Open in Spain.
The Austrian after having a difficult past two years is looking to end the year well by winning the Gijón Open and the upcoming tournaments. The opportunities are plenty for him as some very high-profile tournaments are scheduled in the next couple of months including the European Cup, Stockholm Open, and Paris Masters.
Dominic Thiem is determined to make an impression and get back into preparation mode for the upcoming season.
