Who is the chair umpire for the Women’s Singles finals at the 2023 Australian Open?

The stage is set in the Lod Laver Arena for the first final of the 2023 Australian Open. As the action reaches a crescendo, Elana Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka will lock horns for the final showdown. The tournament has produced some spectacular thrillers in the fortnight and on Saturday, the final battle is expected to be no different. 

Both Rybakina and Sabalenka are looking set to outdo one another. This is a battle of equals. The Russian-born Kazakh Rybakina is the reigning Wimbledon champion and Word No. 5 Belarusian Sabalenka won the Adeilade International title right before the first Grand Slam of the season.

But when the head-to-head comes into the picture, Sabalenka looks ahead. The duo has faced each other three times and in all the meetings Sabalenka outplayed Rybakina. Their last faceoff was in Wimbledon 2021 where Sabalenka defeated Rybakina in three sets. But this won’t matter much on Saturday’s clash as Rybakina is one of the most improved players on the tour and she possesses an invincible weapon, her bullet-paced aces.

So fans on definitely in for some action-filled environment. Amidst the battle, one person who will have the toughest job other than the competitors is the Chair Umpire. The Aussie Thomas Sweeney will be the man officiating the match and his job is not going to be an easy one.

Thomas Sweeney has almost two decades of experience

Tom Sweeney is one of the most notable Chair Umpire and he will officiate the women’s final in the 2023 Australian Open. He has an experience of two decades, starting as a line umpire in Benalla in the early 2000s. In 2009 he joined the Tour and later has been elevated to Chair Umpire. 

2023 is his 21st Australian Open and his 48th grand slam. He has also umpired at both the Rio and Tokyo Olympics. He is also a Tennis Australia consultant. So he is definitely the man for the top job.
