Defending champion and second seed Novak Djokovic will look to extend his unbeaten streak on Centre Court to an astounding 45 wins when he takes the court on Friday to face Jannik Sinner in the semifinals. Against Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals, Djokovic was down by a set, but the Serb, as we have seen countless times, was able to elevate his intensity by a notch or two and hammered the Russian in the second set, wrapping it up 6-1 in just 28 minutes. It was smooth sailing from there on, as the Serb wrapped up the match 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3.

Jannik Sinner has been making headlines not just for his on-court performances, but also for the monogrammed Gucci duffel bag that he has been carrying onto the court during the last week. The Italian broke little sweat in the first two rounds as he got past the Argentine duo of Juan Manuel Cerundolo and Diego Schwartzman. He lost the opening set against Frenchman Quentin Halys in their round 3 encounter, before storming back to win the next three sets to seal the match.

The Italian national, who is a resident of Monaco, comprehensively beat Colombian Daniel Elahi Galán in the round of 16, booking a second successive quarterfinal appearance at the Wimbledon Championships. He was tested by the surprise package of the tournament, Roman Safiullin. Sinner eventually prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to book a rendezvous with 23-time Grand Slam champion, Novak Djokovic for the second year in a row at the Championships.

An ebullient Novak told Lee McKenzie in his post-match interview following his quarterfinal win over Andrey Rublev that he considers himself the favorite to win the tournament. While the statement may seem boastful, it does not appear to be out of sync with reality. Just as Lee McKenzie remarked, every day a new statistic is added to the Serb’s arsenal of tennis records. This time, Djokovic equaled Roger Federers record of making 46 Grand Slam singles semi-final appearances.

Jannik Sinner will look to avenge his defeat at the hands of the defending champion at the quarterfinal stage last year, where he lost despite having led by two sets. Speaking to reporters after his quarterfinal win, the Italian said that he feels that he is a lot stronger than he was 12 months ago.

Sinner was frank enough to admit that the upcoming match against Djokovic would be one of his toughest challenges, but the eighth seed was quick to sign off on a more confident note, suggesting that he was hopeful of executing his game plan against Djokovic successfully.

Sinner will have to play the match of his career if he wants to put the brakes on the seven-time champion’s path to the final. It will be interesting to see if the 21-year-old can maintain the same level of intensity over the entire course of the match. Djokovic leads their head-to-head record with two wins and no defeats, and he will be the firm favorite to continue the streak and reach greater heights.

Prediction: Novak Djokovic to win in 4 sets
