US Open champion, Coco Gauff, will be across the net from the Russian tennis professional, Veronika Kudermetova, at her upcoming Round of 16 match at the China Open tomorrow. The World No.16 will be playing her first WTA 1000 event following her title win at the recently concluded Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

World No.3 Coco Gauff has had a great season so far. The teen went on to win the Citi Open in Washington and followed up with her win at the Cincinnati Masters. Gauff then proceeded to win her first Grand Slam at the US Open, defeating current World No.1, Aryna Sabalenka. The 19-year-old beat Croatian player, Petra Martic in her second-round match, scoring 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 over three sets. The World No.48 did challenge the American in the third set, however, Gauff did not let loose in the set.

Veronika Kudermetova, on the other hand, faced Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko in her first match since her Pan Pacific Open win over Jessica Pegula. Seeded at No.16, Kudermetova progressed to the third round against Gauff, beating Tsurenko in a three-setter. Although Tsurenko set the Russian for a challenging first set, Kudermetova stunned everyone with her stellar comeback in the second set. She emerged victorious with a score of 3-6, 6-0, 6-0.

Owning to her recent participation at the Finals of the WTA event in Japan, Kudermetova received a performance bye and entered straight into the second round.

It is worth noting that Gauff and Kudermetova have clashed head-to-head against each other on two previous occasions this year. The duo’s head-to-head stands at 1-1. Gauff won at her latest clash with Kudermetova at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart earlier this year in a first-round encounter that lasted three sets. Before that, the two had a face-off in February at the Quarter-final round in Qatar, where the Russian ousted the teen with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

Kudermetova scored an easy win over Gauff a few months back. However, since her loss at Wimbledon this year, Gauff has undergone a great transformation to become a better player. Since her Grand Slam victory, the teenager has impressively won all but one of her matches and secured three out of the four titles she’s competed for this year. With 16 WTA 1000 wins this year, the American is only three victories shy of breaking Bianca Andreescu‘s record of most WTA 1000 wins by a teenager.

Kudermetova too, has fared quite well this season. Fuelled by her latest title win a few days back, the Russian will step on-court with the intention to win the match. She will likely be very cautious of her moves on-court and keep her head a hundred percent. Given her recent performance, the odds are stacked in favor of Coco Gauff to win the upcoming match against Kudermetova.
