‘Emma you are fantastic, Daniil, you absolutely deserve your first Grand Slam,’ Novak Djokovic congratulates the newly crowned US Open champions

Emma Raducanu and Daniil Medvedev

World No.1 and 20-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic took to social media to congratulate the both US Open champions- Daniil Medvedev and Emma Raducanu for their maiden grand slam victories.

Djokovic, who was eyeing to become the first man since Rod Laver to complete a calendar slam and take the all-time grand slam list, had to bite the dust in the US Open final against Daniil Medvedev. He lost to the Russian in straight sets 4-6,4-6,4-6 and was denied the opportunity to create history.

On the women’s side, in an already historic all-teenage final, Emma Raducanu shattered records left, right and centre in her historic triumph by beating Canadian Leylah Fernandez in straight sets 6-4,6-3 to win her maiden grand slam.

Novak Djokovic was chasing history in New York when he stepped on the Arthur Ashe stadium. He was 27-0 in majors this season and was just one victory away from completing the calendar slam. But it just wasn’t his day, as he couldn’t find his groove at any time during the match.

The Serb, for the first time in recent times looked helpless and had no answers for Medvedev’s gameplan. Djokovic even broke his racquet in frustration during the second set but nothing worked for him. Just before the final game of the match, Djokovic was seen crying inconsolably under the towel, and had sore eyes.

He was emotional throughout his speech, and was softly sobbing after the crowd gave him the loudest of cheers. He said that he had never left this kind of love, and broke down.

Meanwhile, Djokovic will now have to wait for 4 months to gun once again for the 21st slam at the 2022 Australian Open.
