Novak Djokovic set to remain World No.1 as Daniil Medvedev crashes out in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open
Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev lost another opportunity of reclaiming World No. 1 ranking after he lost in the quarter-finals to defending Hubert Hurkacz at the 2022 Miami Open. The Russian was just one win away from dethroning Novak Djokovic but never quite found his rhythm as he lost 7(9)-6(7), 6-3. With this loss, Djokovic will consolidate his position at the summit of the standings and will enter the clay-court season at the World No.1.
Medvedev struggled with his serve hit 6 double faults and landed just 52% of his first serve. The match was evenly poised in the first set as both the players traded a break of serve each to force the set into a tie-break, where Hurkacz just edged out to win the opener. Then it was one-sided in the next set and the Pole broke Medvedev twice to clinch his second-straight semi-final appearance in Miami. As for Medvedev, he couldn’t adjust to the humid conditions and even called a trainer during the second set as he fell to a second-straight quarter-final loss in Miami.
Hurkacz will now take on the winner of the other quarter-final clash between Carlos Alcaraz and Miomir Kecmanovic. The 25-year-old is not just in line for defending his title but also adding another silverware in the doubles as well. Hurkacz along with his partner John Isner will square off against the Australian duo of Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis for a spot in the finals.
Novak Djokovic heads into the clay-court season with a narrow lead over Daniil Medvedev
Medvedev lost the glorious opportunity to knock Novak Djokovic off the top spot but is now just 10 points behind the Serb. However, he might not pose much threat to the top spot as the clay-court swing begins next month and Djokovic is all set to return to action at the Monte-Carlo Masters. Unlike earlier, Djokovic has been allowed to compete at tournaments after Covid restrictions have been eased. The World No.1 is already confirmed to feature at the Monte-Carlo Masters, Serbian Open and the French Open.
Djokovic will be heading with huge points to defend considering he is the defending champion at Roland Garros, so Medvedev would be looking to capitalize on this opportunity. But given his poor record on clay courts, it will be hard for the Russian to put up a proper fight.
