Paris Masters 2021: Plenty at stake for Novak Djokovic in Bercy

Novak Djokovic

World No.1 Novak Djokovic will finally return to action at the upcoming ATP Paris Masters next month. The Serb hasn’t played any competitive match on the circuit, since losing in the finals of the 2021 US Open to World No.2 Daniil Medvedev.

Furthermore, there has been plenty of speculation around Djokovic’s Covid-19 vaccination status, in order to play the 2022 Australian Open. Nonetheless, the 20-time Grand Slam champion is back and will shift his focus on winning matches and titles once again.

Djokovic will be the top seed at the finals Masters of the year and although he has already booked his spot in the World Tour Finals next month, he will still be keen on going all the way in Paris.

Currently, the 34-year-old is tied with Rafael Nadal at 36 ATP Masters titles each. If the top-ranked Djokovic can once again triumph on the indoor courts of Bercy, then he will become the only player in history with most Masters 1000 title.

Furthermore, the year-end No.1 is also likely to be heading into an exciting finish. Although the Serb is still in a decent position for a record finish (sevent time), the Russian also has a chance to surpass Djokovic.

Therefore, another decent run in the penultimate Masters of the year could well seal the deal for Djokovic.

Djokovic has won the Masters 1000 event in Paris a record five times—no one else has even won it more than three times. Grand Slams champions Boris Becker and Marat Safin, though have won the Paris Masters three times in their career.

The five-time winner won the Paris Masters for the first time in 2009, when he beat France’s Gael Monfils. He also won the event in 2019 by Canada’s Denis Shapovalov.

Djokovic’s dominance in Paris also has seen him win more matches than anyone. Currently, the Serb has won 37 matches and lost eight.
