Karolína Pliskova vs Donna Vekic: Preview

Karolina Pliskova
Karolina Pliskova

Pliskova has been a former World No.1, and has sixteen WTA Titles to her credit. The twenty-nine year old Czech though has not had the most productive of times post the resumption of the tour. After disappointing in the hard court season, Pliskova has improved a little on clay.

She reached the Quarterfinals of the Stuttgart Open, losing to Ash Barty and reached the Final Of the Italian Open after that, losing to Iga Swiatek. Her first round opponent is Donna Vekic. Vekic has been around for so long that it’s hard to imagine she is only twenty-four. She has two titles on tour, the first of which came way back in 2014.

Once an extremely talented tennis player, injuries have played a massive role in Vekic not being able to fulfill her potential. Coming back on court after a five month hiatus due to a knee surgery it will be interesting to see how she goes. Vekic’s last match was in the fourth round of the Australian Open 2021, a loss to Jennifer Brady 1-6 5-7.

This will be the fifth meeting between these two players. In the previous four settings, Pliskova leads the head to head 3-1.

Karolína Pliskova vs Donna Vekic: Prediction

Karolina Pliskova will be the favourite in the semi-finals of the Italian Open 2021.
Karolina Pliskova

Pliskova suffered the ignominy of being double bageled by Iga Swiatek in her match. Such a humiliation is often difficult for an athlete to move on from, but she must. Pliskova must be more consistent with her returns and understand that she cannot always serve her way out of trouble. As she knows now, the days in which her serve fails, she will be hammered.

Vekic is coming back to the tour after almost five months out, and it’s impossible to know where she is in terms of her fitness. A great player on her day, Vekic would more than anything else want a smooth return to tennis.

Prediction: Karolína Pliskova will beat Donna Vekic in straight sets.
