RECORD BROKEN! Rafael Nadal now holds the record for giving most bagels in a single tournament

Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal is one of the legends of the game and there is absolutely no doubt about that. The Spanish bull has dominated the tennis court since 2005 and when it comes to Clay- particularly Roland Garros, he’s unbeatable. Since making his first appearance in 2005, Nadal has lifted the Coupe des Mousquetaires 13 times and is just 2 matches away from lifting it for the 14 time.

In doing so, he has won 105 matches on the Parisian Clay and has lost just 2, a 98% win record. And now, after his quarterfinal victory over Diego Schwartzman at the 2021 French Open, Nadal has added another feather to his hat. He now holds the record for giving most bagels in a single tournament, 23 at the French Open. Nadal bageled Schwartzman in the last set to register his 105th victory at Roland Garros.

The record was previously held by American legend, Jimmy Connors. He bageled his opponents out 22 times at the US Open. Other legends like Bjorn Borg, Guillermo Villas, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic also feature in the elite list.

Third seed at the tournament, Rafael Nadal had to dig deep to reach his record 14th semifinal at Roland Garros. The 13-time champion defeated 10th seed Diego Schwartzman in four sets 6-3,4-6,6-4,6-0. This was Nadal’s 105th victory at Roland Garros but he failed to equal his record for most consecutive sets won at the French Open.

Nadal previously held the record for 38 consecutive sets won but this time he was stopped at 36 by the Argentine. Nadal will face either Matteo Berrettini or arch nemesis Novak Djokovic in the semifinal on Friday. If Nadal manages to go all the way this time in Paris, he will surpass Roger Federer and will hold the record for most grand slams won-21.
