American actor Will Smith wins the best actor award King Richard at the 2022 SAG Awards. The actor got the better of fellow nominees including Andrew Garfield, Javier Bardem, Denzel Washington, and Benedict Cumberbatch to bag the major win. He played Richard Williams, the father and first coach of Serena and Venus Williams, in the movie.
In his acceptance speech, Will Smith said that this could be one of the greatest moments of his career as his name was called while he was sitting next to the legendary Venus Williams.
“That may have been one of the greatest moments of my career because my name was called for King Richard sitting next to Venus Williams,” Smith said.
He then heaped praises of Richard Williams and called him a dreamer like no one else. “Richard Williams is a dreamer like no one you’ve ever known. He has a power of belief that borders on insanity and sometimes tips over the border which is absolutely necessary to take something from impossible to possible,” he said.
‘I just want to say thank you very much it was my deepest pleasure to honor your family’: Will Smith and Serena and Venus Williams
Smith further acknowledged the Williams family and thanked them for trusting him with the role. “Venus, Serena, the Williams family- You entrusted me and our group with your story,” he said.
“You didn’t agree to put your name on it until you saw the final project, I agree that you know, it’s cool that’s real because we are messing stuff up sometimes but when I got the call and you watched the movie and you said you loved it, I just want to say thank you very much it was my deepest pleasure to honor your family and to tell your story to the world thank you,” he signed off.
King Richard is a film based on the struggles Richard Williams faced on daily basis to push his daughters- Serena and Venus, into tennis. The film touches ground reality a black man faced 30 years ago for basic stuff.
