World No. 14 Diego Schwartzman is back on his favourite Clay courts and is the top-seed at the ongoing 2022 Cordoba Open and the local lad is into the semi-finals of the tournament. The Argentine has been a lifelong fan of 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and he has been open about his admiration for the Swiss Maestro.

Schwartzman has gone on record and often talked about how Federer has been different from other players, not only in terms of being a player on the court but also as a person off the court. In a recent interview with ESPN, Schwartzman again put light on Federer’s mannerism and also expressed his desire that the former World No. 1 continues to play the sport forever.

I hope he never retires, really. Roger is a gentleman, he is perfect on the pitch, but outside he is even better. When you see how he behaves in the locker room, how he jokes around with everyone, says hello. it’s simply impressive… It’s impressive.

On the court, I had moments in my matches with him where I felt like I was playing well, with opportunities, and he seemed bored and was going to beat me whenever he wanted. He is the one who has the most variations and tennis repertoire in all history,” said Schwartzman in his interview with ESPN.

Federer and Schwartzman have had 2 meetings on hard courts and 2 meetings on Clay. They met for the first time in the 2nd round of the 2014 French Open where Federer was seeded 4th and Diego a qualifier. Federer won the match in straight-sets and had a similar result in their second meeting in the 2nd round of the 2015 Indian Wells Masters with the Swiss again winning in straight-sets.

Their next meeting was in the semi-finals of the 2015 Istanbul Open, the only time Schwartzman was able to take a set from Federer. The last meeting between them came in the 2nd round of the 2017 Shanghai Masters where Federer won in straight-sets on his way to winning the tournament for the 2nd time and now leads their head-to-head tie 4-0.
